Matius 11:10

11:10 This is the one about whom it is written:

‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, ¹ 

who will prepare your way before you.’ ² 

Matius 11:14

11:14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.

Matius 17:11-13

17:11 He ³  answered, “Elijah does indeed come first and will restore all things. 17:12 And I tell you that Elijah has already come. Yet they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted. In ⁴  the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.” 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

[11:10]  ² sn The quotation is primarily from Mal 3:1 with pronouns from Exod 23:20. Here is the forerunner who points the way to the arrival of God’s salvation. His job is to prepare and guide the people, as the cloud did for Israel in the desert.
